The catalytic converter has lost efficiency.

The diesel catalytic converter (DOC) is a chemical reactor that converts toxic gases into harmless substances. Over time, it can become contaminated by oil or poor quality fuel, losing its conversion capacity.

What is the catalytic converter

The chemical reactor in your exhaust

The diesel catalytic converter (DOC - Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) has an internal honeycomb structure coated with noble metals (platinum and palladium). When hot gases pass through it, it transforms Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Hydrocarbons (HC) into Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and water.

Catalytic Converter SCR (AdBlue)

In Euro 6 engines, there is a second catalyst (SCR) where AdBlue is injected to neutralize Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), transforming them into pure Nitrogen and water — completely harmless substances.

Failure symptoms

How to know if your vehicle needs attention?

  • Mandatory periodic inspection failure (IPO)
  • Rotten egg or sulphur smell from the exhaust
  • Engine light on — O2 sensor with abnormal values
  • General engine performance loss
  • Excessive smoke from the exhaust
  • Progressive increase in fuel consumption

Consequences

What happens if you don't treat it?

Although the catalytic converter doesn't clog as easily as the DPF/FAP, chemical contamination reduces its efficiency and affects the entire anti-pollution system.

  • Catalytic converter replacement — part between €500 and €2,500
  • Particulate Filter failure due to lack of catalytic converter support
  • Systematic periodic inspection failure
  • Oxygen sensor (lambda) failures
  • Environmental impact from untreated toxic gas emissions
